A cosigner accepts more than a supporting role
Adding a cosigner can change a lender’s assessment, but it does not create an unconditional approval. The lender may review both parties’ finances and credit histories. The exact agreement determines whether someone is a joint borrower or provides a guarantee, and what must happen before the creditor can require payment from them. The supporting person should assess whether they could repay the outstanding debt if the main borrower could not.
Review liability before joining an application
The FCAC explains disclosure rights for joint borrowers at federally regulated institutions. Credit Canada offers counselling that can help examine the household commitments behind a proposed guarantee. Ask whether the account appears on each person’s credit report, how arrears notifications are delivered and whether release requires repayment or a fresh lending decision. A private understanding between family members does not necessarily restrict the rights given to the creditor in the contract they both sign.
